Surviving Exam Season As A Parent
Exam season is a stressful time not just for students but also for parents. Parents often find themselves balancing the pressure of supporting their children academically while managing their own concerns about their child's performance and wellbeing. It is crucial to provide yourself with the right support, guidance, and reassurance to help you navigate this challenging period effectively.
Educating parents on effective study strategies
Many parents may not be familiar with modern study techniques (I know that I wasn’t!) and may inadvertently put pressure on their children by insisting on outdated methods. Provide yourself with resources on effective study strategies, such as time management and other techniques which can help guide them in a constructive way.
Encourage a healthy routine
Parents often worry about their child’s academic performance but may overlook the importance of a healthy routine. Ensure that children get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and take breaks during study sessions. A well balanced routine enhances concentration and memory retention, ultimately leading to better academic performance.
A healthy routine also means managing time away from devices and especially social media and chat. This can often be challenging as I know from personal experience. However, experience also teaches us that focus is important and that social media is a distraction. So an agreed plan needs to be in place for when a child can use their devices and when they need to commit to study. It was so much easier in my day as the internet with all its distractions didn't exist, but trust will be needed between you and your child as often revision requires a computer and the web to complete the study. This can also elevate your stress levels so as I have mentioned, looking after yourself on this journey is vital!
Manage your own anxiety
It is easy to transfer your own stress and anxiety to your children. Attend workshops or look at resources on stress management techniques, such as mindfulness and deep breathing exercises which can help you remain calm and supportive during the exam season and also reminding them that exams are just a part of the educational journey which can alleviate unnecessary pressure.
Provide emotional support
Emotional support is just as important as academic guidance. Encouraging words, patience and reassurance go a long way in boosting a child's morale. Sometimes, a simple “I believe in you” can make a significant difference in how a child approaches their exams.
Encourage realistic expectations
Set realistic expectations based on your child’s individual strengths and abilities. While aiming for good grades is important, unrealistic expectations can lead to pressure and burnout. Support your children in setting achievable goals and focusing on progress rather than perfection.
Essential oils for studying
Rosemary oil is a memory booster known for its cognitive function and its ability to enhance memory. Inhaling the oil can improve concentration.
Lemon oil can improve mood and boost concentration. Its fresh aroma helps clear mental fog.
Lavender oil is known for its calming effects when exam stress is becoming overwhelming. Wonderful for both parents and children.
Frankincense is great for deep focus and mindfulness. It can help one remain present and engaged whilst studying.
Oils can be placed in an oil burner or electric diffuser or simply a drop added to a tissue for inhalation. (Please speak to a professional aromatherapist if you are unsure)
Professional guidance
Some parents may need professional advice to help their child manage exam stress. Teachers and counsellors can play a crucial role by offering guidance sessions, or study workshops that equip parents with the necessary tools to support their children effectively.
Supporting parents during this challenging time is just as important as supporting students. By providing guidance, resources, and emotional reassurance, parents can create a more positive and stress-free environment at home. Encouraging healthy habits, fostering communication, and managing expectations can help both parents and students navigate the exam season with confidence and resilience.
