Nurturing your skin through the cold months
As winter settles in, our skin often becomes the first to feel the effects of the season. Cold air, low humidity, and indoor heating can quickly strip away moisture, leaving the complexion dry, dull, or sensitised. The skin’s barrier—the protective layer that keeps hydration in and irritants out, faces its toughest challenge during the colder months.
Caring for your skin in winter isn’t about adding complexity; it’s about restoring balance. With a few small adjustments, you can keep your skin healthy, radiant, and resilient during the cold months.
What works for your skin in summer may not serve it in winter. As temperatures drop, humidity decreases, and our skin naturally produces less oil, it’s time to rethink texture and hydration.
Cleanser: Swap foaming or gel cleansers for cream or balm based ones that gently cleanse without stripping natural oils. Look for ingredients like glycerine, oat extract, or squalane for extra softness.
Moisturiser: Choose richer formulations that include ceramides, fatty acids, and hyaluronic acid to strengthen the skin barrier and retain moisture.

Exfoliation: Limit exfoliation to once a week. Over exfoliating can disrupt the barrier and worsen dryness. Gentle enzyme based exfoliants are ideal in winter.
The goal is comfort, skin that feels supple, calm, and hydrated, not tight or squeaky clean.
Layer hydration
Winter air pulls water from the skin, so it’s important to build hydration in layers. Think of it like dressing for the cold and each layer plays a role.
Start with a hydrating mist followed by a water based serum containing hyaluronic acid. Then, seal everything in with a nourishing facial oil or cream that locks hydration into the skin. Facial oils can also be used on top of a cream to seal in moisture.
Ingredients such as prickly pear seed oil, camellia seed oil, and olive squalane mimic the skin’s natural lipids and reinforce the barrier, perfect partners for dry, compromised winter skin.
Protect the skin barrier
Your barrier is your skin’s shield. When it’s healthy, your complexion looks smooth and luminous; when it’s compromised, you may experience redness, flaking, or sensitivity.
To protect it:
Avoid hot showers or washing your face with very warm water, they can dehydrate the skin.
Apply moisturiser or facial oil to damp skin to trap moisture
Use a humidifier indoors to restore ambient moisture in heated rooms.
Sun protection
It’s easy to forget SPF in winter, but UV rays remain active all year round, and snow (even though we don’t get much of it!) can reflect up to 80% of them. Daily sunscreen use prevents premature ageing and maintains even skin tone.
Opt for a lightweight SPF 50 and reapply if you spend time outdoors. Your future skin will thank you for it.
Nourish from the inside out
Hydration doesn’t just come from topical creams. Drinking enough water and eating a diet rich in healthy fats such as avocados, nuts and salmon can strengthen the skin from within. Foods high in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants help maintain elasticity and protect against dryness and inflammation.
Soothe and restore
Winter invites us to slow down and skincare can become a soothing ritual rather than a routine. Take time to massage your face when applying oils or moisturisers as this supports circulation, lifts tension, and promotes a natural glow.
For an added touch of wellbeing, incorporate gentle aromatherapy: lavender, frankincense, or chamomile oils in a diffuser can calm the mind as you nourish the skin.
Winter skincare isn’t about perfection—it’s about protection and nourishment. By looking after your skin’s needs and creating small moments of care, you transform what could be a harsh season into a time of restoration.
